Now and Then, Here and There - This is one of the most unrelentingly cruel narratives I've ever consumed in any format. For what it is, it's well done - I just hate what it is.
[...]
Puella Magi Madoka Magica - I watched the first episode, searched for synopses, discovered that my predictions were basically accurate, and decided against it. I've already watched Now and Then, Here and There once; I don't need to see the shoujo version.
I had already watched, and enjoyed, Madoka. I was curious as to how a shounen anime could be a pendant to Madoka, given that I like Madoka because it's a deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre.
Now I've watched, and not enjoyed, Now and Then, Here and There. I didn't find it so terrifically horrible - but then again, all the nice guys annoyed or infuriated me, and I spend most of the show wishing for them to just fucking die already (the only exceptions were Lala Ru, who doesn't have enough personality to be hated, and Sis, until she told Sara not to hate her rape!baby - BECAUSE OF COURSE RAISING A RAPE!BABY IS A BRILLIANT IDEA, ESPECIALLY IF THE MOTHER CONSIDERED KILLING HERSELF TO ESCAPE/MURDER SAID BABY. And after a doctor had mentionned the choice of abortion, graaah!)
So, could anyone explain to me why this boring shounen anime is supposed to be equal to Madoka?
Even the tone of the ending is different! Madoka's ending isn't anywhere near this feeling of absurdity and uselessness (and boredom for you faithful watcher, but hey). Not to mention Madoka's characters were all likeable, and the plot was a lot more interesting and less predictable (I don't think you can foretell episode 10 unless you've been spoiled).
