They'd heard this was but a fraction of the Juubi. Merely a shadow of the original evil, nothing quite as terrifying.
And they'd thought: it'll be okay. Their hero had defeated the original evil for them; all that was left to fight were its remnants. Now that its unfathomable power had been cut down into nine animals, however gigantic the beasts, they could handle it by themselves.
Were they ever more wrong.
They only realized it when the first houses started crumbling under its paws, roof and floors and cave and everything in between, the women and children inside shrieking as it buried them under the rumbles. Then it launched its head forward - how reckless they'd all been, to try and fight it close-range! - and its fangs closed on the nearest man with a horrible sound of crushed bones and blood gushing out a dozen different wounds.
The Kyuubi clenched its jaws and tore the body in two, letting the halves fall to the ground before it turned to its next prey. And as its eyes scanned its surroundings, careful and cunning and full of ancient malice, all the shinobi on the battlefield shivered with pure horror.
It was no mere beast; it was fear given form. Even the oldest, most experienced ones felt their limbs start to shake a little.
And the Kyuubi smiled at them, full of teeth and hatred, blood slowly dripping from its lower jaw.
