Written for 15_minute_fic's word #150. I failed at the 15 minutes part, but hey! I wrote fic! About canon characters!
I'm not so sure about my characterization in that one - they're supposed to be older but I don't know how long after the canon, and it's probably AU anyway.
According to French wikipedia, hemlocks means "You have to die" (in reference to the Greeks, who reportedly killed condemned citizen with it). I can't find this meaning on English sites, though - maybe it's a French meaning, or something?
Ino bumps into Shikamaru on her way to the Torture and Interrogation office. She lets out a cry of surprise, and almost falls flat on her ass because of the bouquet she's holding.
Shikamaru catches her by the waist and helps her stand properly, all the while frowning at the flowers in her arms.
They stare at each other in awkward silence for a minute or two.
"Hemlock?" he finally asks, pointing at the bouquet, and his nose wrinkles slightly.
She shrugs.
"Yes, hemlock. Not every bouquet can have a happy meaning, you know."
His brow twitches.
"Ino - Hemlock is about death."
She smiles.
"Why, I had no idea you were interested in the language of flowers, Shikamaru."
He blushes, and quickly raises his hands to his temples to hide it.
She giggles a bit.
"You're gonna fuck with someone's head again, aren't you?"
"Yes, I am."
She keeps on giggling, but her smiles grows colder - edgier.
He lets his arms fall down his sides and glares at her. She almost feels guilty. She pouts to hide it - much more efficiently than he does his sadness. He must fight really hard to keep his frown, if the trembling of his lips is any indication.
And then comes the sight, soft and resigned, and he asks, like a confession, barely a whisper-
"Do you really have to use flowers for that?"
She bends toward him, brushes her nose against his and smiles her best childish, cruelly happy smile.
"Silly Shikamaru, didn't you know messing with boys' heads is why girls created bouquets in the first place?".

Date: 2011-01-13 09:50 pm (UTC)Vraiment, c'est la classe pour elle. Par contre, Shikamaru me semble un peu plus en retrait, je n'ai pas l'impression de ressentir la "voix" des mangas, mais cela fait très longtemps que je ne les ai pas lus, sans même parler des tomes de retard. ^^;;

Je trouve que Shikamaru est trop en avant dans le manga, donc j'ai tendance à renverser leur dynamique (typiquement pour qu'Ino malmène ses certitudes et son confort mental, au lieu de voir sa personnalité à elle étouffée parce qu'elle est en retrait derrière lui).
Sinon, niveau caractérisation, je ne vois pas vraiment ce que je pourrais changer. A part rajouter un "how troublesome" quelque part, mais je trouve ça cheap, de caractériser Shikamaru en lui faisant recracher une phrase stéréotypée.
